Vietnam Travel Guide – Hanoi Premium Travel
(Essential Tips for Your Journey with Hanoi Premium Travel)
From the emerald peaks of Ha Long Bay to the lantern-lit streets of Hoi An, Vietnam is a country that awakens every sense. Planning your adventure here isn’t just about booking hotels and flights—it’s about knowing how to navigate the small details that make travel seamless.
This guide, curated by Hanoi Premium Travel, gives you insider knowledge to make your journey worry-free, delicious, and unforgettable.
🛂 Visa Requirements
Traveling to Vietnam has become easier than ever, thanks to streamlined entry policies. Depending on your nationality, purpose, and length of stay, there are a few ways to secure your visa:
- Visa Exemption – Citizens of select countries can enter Vietnam without a visa for a set period. If you’re from Europe or Southeast Asia, you may already be on this list.
- E-Visa – Simple and efficient, the e-visa can be applied for online through the official Vietnamese government website. Valid for 30 days with a single entry, it costs $25 USD and typically processes within three business days.
- Visa on Arrival – For those flying into Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, or Nha Trang, a pre-arranged approval letter from a reliable agency allows you to obtain your visa once you land. Expect to pay a stamping fee of $25 for single-entry or $50 for multiple-entry visas.
Travel Update: As of August 15, 2023, Vietnam expanded its e-visa program to allow multiple entries within 90 days, opening the door to greater flexibility for travelers who want to hop in and out of the country.
In addition, citizens of 13 countries—including the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Japan, and South Korea—now enjoy visa-free stays of up to 45 days, making Vietnam more accessible than ever.
📍 Traveler Tip: Always double-check the official Vietnam Immigration Department website before you travel, as visa policies can shift. Print out a copy of your e-visa approval or have a digital copy handy on your phone for smooth airport entry.
💵 Currency & Money Matters
Vietnam’s official currency is the Vietnamese Dong (VND). Bills come in bright colors and denominations ranging from 1,000 to 500,000 VND. Don’t be surprised if you feel like a millionaire—$100 USD equals well over 2 million VND.
- Cash Is King: While credit cards are increasingly accepted at upscale hotels and restaurants, many local eateries, shops, and taxis still prefer cash.
- ATMs Everywhere: You’ll find ATMs in every city and even in smaller towns. Most dispense up to 3 million VND per transaction, though withdrawal fees may apply.
- Exchange Wisely: Exchange currency at banks or reputable money changers. Avoid airports where rates can be less favorable.
- U.S. Dollars: In tourist areas, USD is sometimes accepted, but always confirm the rate—paying in Dong usually gives you better value.
📍 Traveler Tip: Carry small bills for taxis, tips, and street food. A 10,000 or 20,000 VND note goes a long way for a coffee or snack.
🩺 Health & Safety
Vietnam is one of the safest destinations in Asia for international travelers, but a little preparation ensures peace of mind.
- Vaccinations: Routine vaccines are recommended, along with Hepatitis A, Typhoid, and Tetanus boosters. Consult your doctor at least six weeks before your trip.
- Food & Water: Street food is part of the adventure—just choose stalls that are busy with locals. Always drink bottled or filtered water.
- Travel Insurance: Essential for covering medical care, trip delays, or lost luggage. Many luxury hotels require proof of insurance upon check-in.
- Personal Safety: Petty theft is rare but possible in crowded areas. Keep your bag zipped and valuables out of sight when exploring busy markets.
📍 Traveler Tip: Pharmacies in Vietnam are well-stocked, but bring your own prescription medications in original packaging.
🌤️ Best Time to Visit
Vietnam stretches over 1,000 miles from north to south, meaning weather varies dramatically by region.
- North (Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Sapa): October to April brings cool, dry weather—perfect for cruising Ha Long or trekking in the mountains.
- Central (Hue, Da Nang, Hoi An): February to August offers sunny skies and warm beach weather.
- South (Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta, Phu Quoc): November to April is the dry season, with blue skies and comfortable humidity.
Luxury Traveler Insight: Many consider March and April the sweet spot—pleasant weather across most of the country, fewer crowds, and vibrant landscapes in full bloom.
🎒 What to Pack
Packing for Vietnam is all about balancing comfort, climate, and culture.
- Light, Breathable Clothing: Cotton and linen work best in the humid climate. In northern regions like Sapa (especially December–March), bring a warm jacket.
- Footwear: Comfortable walking shoes or sandals are essential. For trekking or rural visits, opt for sturdy sneakers or hiking shoes.
- Sun Protection: Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat are must-haves, especially for cruises and beach days.
- Modest Attire for Temples: Pack a scarf or shawl to cover shoulders and knees when visiting pagodas and sacred sites.
- Evening Wear: Upscale restaurants in Hanoi, Hoi An, and Ho Chi Minh City often welcome a smart-casual look—perfect for a night out.
📍 Traveler Tip: A lightweight raincoat or foldable umbrella can be a lifesaver during sudden tropical downpours.
🚗 Transportation
Getting around Vietnam can be part of the adventure—whether you’re zipping through city streets or gliding along a river.
- Domestic Flights: Vietnam Airlines, VietJet, and Bamboo Airways connect major cities affordably and efficiently.
- Private Cars & Drivers: The most comfortable option for luxury travelers—safe, reliable, and hassle-free.
- Trains: The Reunification Express runs from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City. Opt for soft-sleeper cabins for comfort.
- Taxis & Ride Apps: Grab (the Southeast Asian equivalent of Uber) is widely used in cities for both cars and motorbikes.
- Boats & Cruises: Essential for exploring Ha Long Bay, the Mekong Delta, and even short hops to Cham Islands.
📍 Traveler Tip: Always confirm fares before starting a taxi ride, or use Grab for cashless convenience.
🌏 Attractions Not to Miss
Vietnam is a tapestry of history, culture, and natural wonders. These highlights should be at the top of your list:
- Ha Long Bay: A UNESCO World Heritage Site where limestone cliffs rise dramatically from emerald waters—best explored on an overnight luxury cruise.
- Hoi An Ancient Town: Lantern-lit evenings, artisan shops, and riverside charm transport you back in time.
- Hue: Imperial citadels, royal tombs, and pagodas that whisper the story of Vietnam’s dynasties.
- Sapa: Terraced rice fields and mountain treks where cultural encounters with ethnic minority communities enrich the journey.
- Ho Chi Minh City: A fast-paced blend of French colonial landmarks, buzzing markets, and rooftop bars.
- Mekong Delta: Serene waterways, floating markets, and lush orchards reveal Vietnam’s rural soul.
Luxury Traveler Insight: For an elevated experience, book a private sampan in the Mekong or a boutique eco-lodge in Sapa—authentic, intimate, and unforgettable.
🍜 Food & Drink
Vietnamese cuisine is a highlight of any journey—fresh, balanced, and deeply regional.
- Northern Vietnam: Think delicate flavors—Pho (noodle soup), Bun Cha (grilled pork with noodles), and crispy spring rolls.
- Central Vietnam: Spicy and bold—try Mi Quang noodles in Da Nang and the small, savory bites of Hue’s royal cuisine.
- Southern Vietnam: Sweet and tropical—Banh Xeo (crispy pancakes), fresh seafood, and tropical fruit smoothies.
- Coffee Culture: Don’t miss ca phe sua da (iced coffee with condensed milk) or egg coffee in Hanoi.
- Drinks: Local beers like Bia Saigon are refreshing, but fine dining restaurants offer excellent wine lists and craft cocktails.
📍 Traveler Tip: Street food in Vietnam isn’t just safe—it’s sensational. Follow the crowds of locals for the freshest eats.
🎁 Souvenirs to Bring Home
Vietnam offers beautiful keepsakes that carry the spirit of your journey.
- Silk & Tailored Clothing: Hoi An is famous for custom tailoring with a 24-hour turnaround.
- Lacquerware & Ceramics: Handcrafted bowls, vases, and trays make elegant gifts.
- Coffee & Tea: Bring home Vietnam’s rich, aromatic coffee or fragrant lotus tea.
- Handicrafts: From embroidered textiles in Sapa to bamboo goods in the Mekong.
- Lanterns: A signature of Hoi An, these collapsible silk lanterns add color to any home.
📍 Traveler Tip: Bargaining is expected in local markets—but do it with a smile. In fixed-price boutiques, enjoy the ease of stress-free shopping.
With this guide, you’ll arrive in Vietnam not just prepared, but inspired—ready to savor every lantern glow, temple bell, and steaming bowl of pho along the way.
