Overview
Pu Luong (Pù Luông) is located on the cusp of Hoa Binh and Thanh Hoa provinces, about 160 km southwest of Hanoi.
All rice fields, palm groves, waterwheels, and cascading waterfalls, Pu Luong is a popular weekend getaway for locals but sees relatively few foreign visitors. This makes a nice change from the nearby and wildly popular Mai Chau, which is overrun with tourists during the high season.
Pu Luong Nature Reserve was established in 1999 to protect the area’s biodiversity. You’ll find a mix of pristine forest and cultivated rice terraces inside the reserve. It’s a perfect landscape for trekking, and multi-day hikes are a favorite activity. The southeastern corner of the reserve has a few clusters of homestays, making it a good place to base your visit and stay overnight
Day 1: Hanoi – Pu Luong - Easy trek with Bamboo Raft Experience (L, D)
Breakfast at the hotel and check out of your room.
At 07.45 AM: Your private guide and driver will pick you up at your hotel and transfer about 4 hours to Pu Luong - home of the Thai ethnic people. Arrive in Pu Luong in the late morning, check in, and enjoy lunch with the Thai family.
In the afternoon, your private guide and driver will pick you up at your lodge/homestay and transfer you to Cham Stream (15 km). Start your trip by visiting Tom, Ba, and Chieng Lau villages and cross the suspension bridge to discover giant water wheels and duck farms to learn about local agriculture.
Take the Bamboo Raft for a relaxing cruise on the Cham stream (25 mins). After the tour, you walk to the main road to catch the car back to the lodge/homestay.
In the evening, enjoy a delicious dinner prepared by the Thai family. For evening enjoyment, you may choose to take part in a traditional Thai dance show with Ruou Can, a famous local wine in Pu Luong (optional). By joining this performance, you will be able to have a closer look into their cultures.

Local Home Stay! What to expect? | |||||||
As far as we know, there are no * ratings awarded for homestays yet. As the title suggests, you will be a guest in someone’s home. We often use homestays when trekking and visiting minority tribal villages or remote areas, allowing our guests to experience life in these more remote destinations. We also feature a handful of city-center homestays. Homestay accommodation is basic but comfortable; bedding and mosquito nets are provided. The standard of facilities varies depending on location. |
Day 2: Hieu Waterfall 1-day Trek (B, L, D)
Have breakfast at your lodge/homestay and enjoy the peaceful morning at Pu Luong - Pu Luong Nature Reserve
08.30 AM, your guide and driver will pick you up at your lodge and transfer you to Pho Doan Market (the market is only open on Thursday and Sunday mornings). Pho Doan Market is a location where people regularly gather to purchase and sell provisions, livestock, and other goods.
After that, you will trek along small paths/trails through rice fields and forests to reach Hieu village and the waterfall. Have lunch at a local family near the waterfall.
Afternoon: Free time to relax and swim in the waterfall or trek to explore the surrounding villages.
15:30: Our car is waiting for you at the end, then drive you back to the lodge. Then there is free time to walk around the villages. Later, we return to the family to have dinner & stay overnight in a Thai family house in the beautiful Pu Luong - Pu Luong Nature Reserve

Day 3: Kho Muong (Bat cave) Half-day tour – Hanoi (B, L)
Have breakfast at your lodge/homestay and enjoy the peaceful morning at Pu Luong - Pu Luong Nature Reserve
08:00: Your private guide and driver will take you to visit Kho Muong village and explore Bat Cave.
You trek along small paths/trails through rice terraces and across streams to visit the remote rural villages of the Black Thai to learn about the daily life and customs of the local people in Pu Luong. Afterward, continue the journey to explore the bat cave, the largest cave in Pu Luong. * (Depending on the weather conditions)
11:00: Our car is waiting for you at the end, then drive you back to the lodge for lunch
13:00: Drive back to Hanoi and enjoy the rest of the day at leisure. Overnight in Hanoi.

- What to take: Bring along a day backpack, a light cotton dress/trousers, a warm jacket (rain and wind, silk sleeping bag, mosquito repellent, good walking/hiking shoes, a walking stick, a sun hat/sun lotion, hand lotion, lip balm.
- Be aware that in rainy times the trail is muddy and slippery
- Roads: Driving can be a challenge as roads can be bumpy or under construction, and driving time depends on weather and road conditions – only rough estimates can be given.
